The Texas Specials from Fender are one of the best-selling sets of Strat pickups ever, but why? It’s due to the heritage of the brand mixed with the iconic Texas blues tone that these overwound pickups help define. Putting these pickups in any strat style guitar promises to inspire you like the first time you heard Stevie Ray Vaughan in your headphones. Guitars with these pickups retrofitted can increase the value of a guitar too since you have gone ahead and done the work of installing them. Adding these to a lower-end guitar can produce great results but don’t expect miracles since the guitar will still play the same.
The Texas Special CS Stratocaster Set is designed to produce Texan blues tones however due to their high output they work very well for heavy rock too. With a very clean, pure white look Fender has aimed these to fit in any strat but it’s easy to change the covers to something more vintage-looking in seconds.
As mentioned, the Texas Special are higher output strat pickups with the bridge measuring at 6.7k, the middle at 6.5k and the Neck at 6.2k. This results in a rounded full tone with plenty of spank but they’re not as dynamic as normal to lower output Strat pickups. Try these in a heavy rock or even metal setting and that added spank will cut through in ways humbuckers can only dream of.
The Texas Specials are all about “that” tone and less about the vintage correctness. As a result, you won’t find any fancy plastics of manufacturing techniques bought back from the iron age here. What you will find, however, is a tone that today is as set in stone as the guitar itself, if you want that Texas Blues sound then this is where to start!
